Today is a great day we have waited for almost 10 years. Our lengthy development of the game Dungeon Poker is finished and the game is available on out online store( https://kauppa.kirjapainoassa.fi/tuote-osasto/pelikeisari/ ), as well as some board game stores (such as lautapelit.fi).
Making the game has been an immense task of many years and thousands of working hours. The first version was already complete in 2017. After that, the game has been played actively for many years, but balancing it and plosihing it for publication has taken time. Also, keeping the game under the radar combined with sufficiently large blind testing has been a challenging combination.
It is an entirely new kind of game in the genre of board games. The game combines Texas Hold’em poker with the fascinating elements and atmosphere of a fantasy world. The game is entirely in English but also contains a complete rulebook in Finnish.
Below, the most important mechanics of the game:
The Player Characters, each of whom have their own individual special abilities that they can use to affect the poker rounds. Now, who wouldn’t want to remove “hostile” cards from the table with a spell or smash an annoying opponent in the head with a club.
The Monsters that come into the play randomly. They act as an extra player and are also dealt cards. These abominations may also have other special abilities that affect the game. For example, the Undead Maiden, when she enters the game, forces all the players in the pot to reveal one card from their hand. .
The Treasures that the player finds when winning pots. Hence, winning the pots is even more important in Dungeon Poker. than in normal poker. Gold, diamonds, artifacts… such as Giant’s Blood that gives the character that drinks it one exta card, but forces them to reveal one card from their hand.
The Encounters that adjust the game mechanics every time the blind levels change. For example Reckless charge, during which check is not a valid poker action.
In this game, you fight for glory, gold, and diamonds – you do not need money.
We have also solved the common conundrum of someone dropping out of the game right in the beginning of a game evening – in Dungeon Poker, this does not happen, unless the game is played in the “tournament mode”.
In addition to the functioning mechanics we have been passionate about creating an entire fantasy world around the game with its stories.
There have been dozens of people involved in the development, but the core group is: the original inventor of the game Tuukka Joki, Jere Hokkanen, and Rauli Poikela. We have also received consulting from the hardened Finnish veterans of the board gaming world. We thank everyone who have helped, guided, and also kept the game under the radar throughout the years.
